Description
Johannes Uytenbogaert appears as a bearded older man beside a book and desk in Rembrandt’s portrait, with a substantial cloak and curtains contributing to his setting. Inscriptions extend below the figure. Identified as a Remonstrant preacher, the sitter gains a tangible outward presence through face, clothing and neighboring objects rather than a full account of his public life.
Made in 1635, the print combines etching and burin on an octagonal plate. The distinctive field gives the portrait another material character beyond its human subject. Rembrandt offers a concentrated encounter in which the sitter can be considered closely rather than within a large narrative gathering. The image’s interest lies in the meeting of a recognizable identity and a particular represented face, preserving an individual presence through the lasting form of a print.
