Description
Jan Six stands reading beside a bright window at the right of a dark interior. He leans close to the opening, while a chair appears low at the left. Rembrandt lets the room’s deep tones remain around the reader, making his absorbed activity visible through the contrast between the figure, the page and the source of light.
Dated 1647, the print combines etching, drypoint and burin; this impression is the fifth of five states. The range of techniques contributes to a carefully developed portrait whose appearance belongs to the later stage of the plate. Rembrandt brings the absorbed reader into the enduring form of a print, balancing his quiet presence with the room’s deep shadow. The image connects the intimacy of a portrait with the repeatable, materially distinct life of a printed impression.
