About Poplars, Three Trees in Autumn
Claude Monet’s Poplars, Three Trees in Autumn (1891), listed here as Poplars Philadelphia, brings warm seasonal color to the banks of the Epte. Three prominent trunks rise through a deep blue sky, with golden and pink foliage forming a softer line of trees behind them. The dark riverbank separates the upright trees from their broken reflections below. The contrast of warm leaves and cool water gives this version of Monet’s poplar series its distinctive glow. The original is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
