Description
Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring turns toward the viewer from a dark background. A blue-and-gold head covering frames her softly illuminated face, while the bright earring catches a small point of light. Her parted lips and sideways glance make the encounter feel immediate.
Painted around 1665, the work is a tronie rather than a portrait of an identified sitter. Vermeer uses a few luminous surfaces to give the imagined figure presence. The spare setting leaves the expression, fabric, and reflected light to carry the image.
