Description
Study of a Young Woman by Johannes Vermeer, dating from around 1665–67, presents a sitter turning toward the viewer against a nearly black background. Soft light touches her face and pale blue drapery, drawing attention to the gently parted lips and searching eyes.
The simplicity of the setting makes the encounter feel unusually close. In Study of a Young Woman, delicate transitions between light and shade give the face a living presence, while the broad folds of fabric provide a cool, luminous counterpoint.
