Description
In Knight Death and Devil, Albrecht Dürer sets an armored rider on a narrow road through a rugged landscape. The horse’s powerful body and the knight’s upright bearing hold the center of the image, while strange figures press close beside them. Fine engraved lines describe armor, branches, rock, and the dog moving through the foreground with extraordinary precision.
Created in 1513, the engraving brings mortality and menace into a scene of determined forward movement. Death holds an hourglass, and the devil lurks behind the rider, yet the knight maintains his course. The design’s dense detail and firm structure give this small, intricate image a monumental presence.
