Description
Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer dating to about 1497–98. Four riders surge together through the scene, turning the opening seals of the Book of Revelation into an image of overwhelming force. Sword, scales and bow identify different agents of catastrophe, while the figure of Death completes their terrible procession.
Overlapping horses and riders compress the action into a powerful forward movement. Parallel lines establish a middle tone against which their forms stand out, and the open Mouth of Hell at the lower left adds another threat to the people beneath them. Dürer makes danger feel immediate through the crowded arrangement and momentum of the figures. Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse transforms a visionary passage into a forceful image of human vulnerability.
