Description
Caravaggio’s Narcissus shows a young man leaning over dark water, absorbed in his reflected face. Pale sleeves and warm skin emerge from a nearly black setting, while the reflection completes a rounded shape beneath him. The surrounding space offers little distraction.
The body and its image create a closed visual circuit. Bent arms lead the gaze toward the water, and the bright knee balances the lowered head. The painting gives self-absorption a physical form through concentrated light and the close meeting of figure and reflection.
