Description
In A bad night, two women struggle against a night wind, their clothing swept into shapes that seem almost to have lives of their own. In A Bad Night, Francisco Goya makes the weather an active force, disturbing both the figures’ balance and the dignity of their appearance. The movement of fabric gives the scene its restless energy.
Plate 36 of Los Caprichos, published in 1799, joins social observation to the expressive possibilities of aquatint. Dark surrounding tones sharpen the pale folds and exposed gestures. The title sounds like an ordinary complaint, yet the print turns that complaint into a vivid experience of discomfort and vulnerability. Its drama emerges from the meeting of bodies and atmosphere, where a sudden gust can reveal as much as a carefully posed encounter.
