Description
In A Woman Attacking a Sleeping Man, a woman raises an arm over a sleeping man, turning the unguarded body below into the center of a threatened encounter. The contrast between her activity and his prone stillness gives the scene its immediate tension. Goya presents violence at a moment when one participant may not yet be able to recognize or answer it.
The drawing from the Images of Spain album combines brown washes with traces of chalk, allowing the bodies to retain a searching surface. Its force comes from the unequal states of awareness, where sleep makes an ordinary resting person suddenly vulnerable. The image remains unsettling through that closeness, asking the viewer to attend to danger entering a familiar setting without supplying a reassuring account of what has brought it there.
