Description

In Pretty teacher!, two nude figures ride together on a broom, with an owl above them adding another presence to their improbable flight. Francisco Goya’s Pretty Teacher! makes the airborne encounter sound like a lesson being passed from one participant to another. The scene turns instruction into an initiation whose setting belongs to superstition rather than ordinary education.

Plate 68 of Los Caprichos, published in 1799, uses etching and burnished aquatint to give the bodies and their support a concentrated physical presence. Goya’s caption can be heard as admiration or mockery, keeping the relationship between the riders unsettled. The image’s interest lies in the transmission of a practice, where experience offers guidance without guaranteeing wisdom. Its fantastic movement makes that distinction memorable, allowing the idea of learning to become inseparable from a journey into irrational belief.
