Description

Francisco Goya’s Appeals Are in Vain places starving people beside a building as more fortunate passersby move close to them. Thin limbs and gaunt faces reveal the severity of their condition. Their appeal does not produce a corresponding gesture of help. The proximity between the two groups makes the separation especially cruel: those with the means to respond are near enough to see.

Plate 54 of The Disasters of War belongs to Goya’s account of the famine that accompanied the Peninsular War. Its title turns an unanswered request into the image’s central fact. Precise etched features individualize the sufferers, preventing poverty from becoming a distant abstraction. The scene examines the failure of sympathy as much as the lack of food, asking what happens when visible suffering is treated as an inconvenience to pass by.
