Description
In They Can Still Be of Use, Francisco Goya shows wounded men being gathered and carried away after battle. In the foreground, two figures support a badly injured soldier, while others move a second casualty on an improvised stretcher. The repeated acts of lifting extend into the distance, making exhaustion and bodily weight the composition’s dominant rhythm.
Plate 24 of The Disasters of War places an unsettling qualification on this apparent scene of assistance. Its title suggests that the wounded may be tended because they can return to fighting, making compassion difficult to separate from military usefulness. Goya contrasts the injured figures with an open sky and darker foreground. The scene offers a sober view of care under wartime conditions, where rescue does not necessarily mean release from danger.
