Description
A scuffle unfolds over a prone figure in Revenge on Constable Lampiños. The low body and the people gathered around it give the title’s promised retaliation a direct physical form. Goya turns a named encounter with authority into a scene whose force must be considered through the vulnerability of someone on the ground.
The drawing from the Images of Spain album uses brown washes with gray ink touches to give the action an unsettled presence. Its interest lies in the change of position implied by the subject, where someone associated with official power becomes exposed to the acts of others. The work keeps that reversal human rather than simply triumphant, asking the viewer to attend to revenge as an event enacted upon a body.
