Description

In He Defends Himself Well, Francisco Goya places a pale horse at the center of a ring of threatening animals. The horse stretches into a forceful kick while dogs and wolves occupy the surrounding ground. Its bright body and outward thrust create the composition’s main energy. The animal seems both isolated and capable of resistance, refusing to remain merely a victim.

Plate 78 of The Disasters of War turns animal conflict into an open-ended political allegory. Different interpretations have assigned the creatures different roles, but the struggle between pressure and self-defense is immediately visible. Goya’s spare setting concentrates attention on the horse’s movement and the encircling forms. The title grants a moment of admiration without promising victory, making resilience a precarious action performed amid forces whose intentions remain dangerous.
