Description

Aesop stands frontally, giving the ancient storyteller the tangible presence of a person encountered face to face. The portrait-like treatment makes a name associated with fables feel less distant, inviting attention to the figure through whom such stories might be imagined. Learning and everyday experience meet without the protection of grand ceremony.

Goya created this etching in 1778 after Velázquez’s painted composition. The transformation into print gives the figure a surface of carefully worked lines, allowing the earlier image to be approached through a different material language. Its appeal lies in the meeting of literary identity and individual presence, making a celebrated author recognizable through a human figure whose expression and bearing can remain as engaging as the stories attached to him.
