Description

Bridge and Cows shows cattle standing in shallow water beside a rustic wooden bridge in a pastoral landscape. Trees shade the gathering, and two pairs of figures occupy the bank, giving the setting a human presence alongside the animals. Turner draws interest from the different ways living figures and wooden structures belong to the same quiet stretch of land and water.

Published on June 11, 1807, Bridge and Cows combines etching and mezzotint and belongs to the opening part of Liber Studiorum. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched the scene, while Charles Turner added the engraved tone; this impression is the second of five states. The work finds variety in ordinary rural elements, with bridge, shade and shallow water offering distinct spaces within one composition. Its calm comes from their shared arrangement rather than from an absence of small activities.
