Description

Lauffenbourgh rises beside the Rhine through a cluster of buildings and towers in this print designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Thomas Hodgetts. A stone bridge crosses the middle of the view, with rocky water occupying the foreground. The town’s upright forms answer the river’s movement, bringing architecture and flowing water into a compact, closely connected landscape.

Published on January 1, 1811, the etching and mezzotint belongs to Liber Studiorum. Turner’s design and Hodgetts’s engraved work give the subject a combined linear and tonal form, distinguishing the print from a unique watercolor or oil painting. The landscape’s interest lies in the relation between a built place and its surroundings, where a town can become more than a collection of structures. The Rhine gives settlement a wider connection, making the view an encounter with an inhabited natural world.
