Description

Tall empty windows rise above three ornate Gothic arches in this Holy Island Cathedral print, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Charles Turner. Rubble gathers beneath the frontal view of the ruins. The surviving forms give the building a strong architectural presence while the broken lower ground makes time and loss tangible within its particular setting.

Published on February 20, 1808, the etching and mezzotint is part of Liber Studiorum. The print gives the subject a combined linear and tonal form, allowing a particular building to be considered through the medium’s worked surface. The design’s interest lies in the relationship between place and human construction, where a cathedral can become a point of attention within a wider visual field. The image keeps architecture tangible while allowing its setting to contribute to the encounter.
