Description
A dark storm spreads across broad moorland in Peat Bog, Scotland, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by George Clint. A rainbow appears at the right, above small figures and livestock near the lower edge. The weather transforms modest ground into an expansive scene, while the inhabitants keep its atmospheric drama connected to ordinary rural life.
Published on April 23, 1812, the print combines etching, aquatint and mezzotint and is part of Liber Studiorum. Turner’s design gains its tonal printed presence through Clint’s engraving, distinguishing the work from a unique watercolor or painting. The view’s interest lies in the significance granted to familiar ground, where landscape need not be spectacular to remain worth sustained looking. The image gives an ordinary Scottish subject a particular material character within a broader exploration of places and their differing lives.
