Description

Light entering a doorway reveals the working center of Pembury Mill. A waterwheel lies toward the lower left, with figures and equipment occupying the darker interior around the illuminated opening. Turner makes brightness a guide through the mill, allowing the practical setting to acquire interest through the relationship of its human activity, machinery and surrounding shadow.

Published on June 10, 1808, the print combines etching and mezzotint and is the first of four states. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched it, with Charles Turner engraving and publishing the finished plate. The division of work joins the artist’s established outlines with the tonal development of the print. Its appeal lies in that transformation of a modest subject into a full landscape, where a familiar building gains interest through its relationship with the ground around it.
