Description

Near Blair Athol shows a kilted fisherman casting in a shallow stream bordered by boulders and trees, with Scottish peaks visible only in the distance. J. M. W. Turner gives Near Blair Athol an intimate activity before a wider landscape. The figure’s small scale lets the rocks and water remain substantial, while the distant mountains extend the setting without displacing the close foreground encounter.

Issued in 1811 for Liber Studiorum, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with William Say developing the tonal work. The print balances clear foreground forms against the more distant terrain, allowing the fisherman to connect the landscape with human use. The scene’s interest comes from this relationship between an ordinary act and the layered natural space around it.
