Description
The Leader Sea Piece shows a large anchored warship guarding the coast near the Nore, while a smaller boat closer to the viewer works into a stiff breeze. The difference between the vessels gives the sea scene both weight and movement. Turner connects their separate activities through the open water, making a coastal setting a place of watchfulness as well as travel.
Published on March 29, 1809, The Leader Sea Piece combines etching and mezzotint. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched the plate, while Charles Turner engraved and published it; this impression is the first of three states. Also known as The Guard-ship at the Nore, it belongs to the marine subjects of Liber Studiorum. The large ship and smaller craft offer different responses to the same environment, allowing the composition to balance an anchored presence with the demands of wind and water.
