Description
Boys gather around a table in a wooded clearing in Juvenile Tricks, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by William Say. Trees rise at the left above the seated and standing figures. The sepia tones connect their gathering to the surrounding woodland, making youthful activity the living center of a sheltered, closely observed landscape.
Published on January 1, 1811, the etching and mezzotint is part of Liber Studiorum. Turner gives everyday life a place within a series exploring the variety of landscape, while Say’s tonal engraving brings the design into its printed form. The image’s interest lies in the meeting between small human actions and a wider setting. A scene of play can remain engaging through the company involved, making a familiar place particular through the life taking place within it.
