Description
Windmill and Lock shows a mill rising at sunset above men working the lock gates, with a white horse nearby. J. M. W. Turner gives the waterway a practical human setting, connecting the prominent structure with activity at ground level. The mill’s height and the smaller figures establish different scales, allowing a scene of transport and labor to retain the atmosphere of a landscape.
Issued in 1811 for Liber Studiorum, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with William Say supplying tonal engraving. The composition derives from Turner’s 1810 painting of the Grand Junction Canal at Southall Mill. Its printed form gives the familiar working site a concentrated structure, joining the windmill’s silhouette with the quieter actions taking place below it.
