Description
Four boys play with toy boats at the shore in Marine Dabblers, with adult fishermen preparing to depart farther behind them. One small vessel founders, giving the children’s game a comic incident that echoes the less playful risks of the working sea. Turner brings two scales of maritime activity into contact within the same coastal setting.
Published in June 1811, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with William Say engraving the tonal passages. This impression is the first of two states in Liber Studiorum. The landscape allows play and livelihood to share the water without becoming identical experiences. Attention can move from the boys’ immediate concerns toward the preparations beyond them, where a seemingly lighthearted scene acquires a broader human implication.
