Description
Scene in the Campagna shows a woman dipping her hands into a water tank near people tending sheep in the Roman countryside. At the right, a river leads toward a tower, a classical temple and a bridge. The everyday activity in the foreground belongs to a wider prospect whose architecture and flowing water give it an expansive, ordered character.
Published on February 1, 1812, Scene in the Campagna combines etching and mezzotint. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched it, while William Say engraved the tonal passages; this is the first of two states. The plate belongs to the elevated pastoral subjects of Liber Studiorum. Its interest lies in joining ordinary human tasks with a landscape that feels larger and more enduring than the immediate activity taking place within it.
