Description
Sunset opens above a comparatively calm sea in Turner’s Mildmay Sea-Piece, while people and boats gather along the foreground shore at the right. The figures’ small activity belongs to a prospect whose greater presence is light across the water. Turner gives the coast a measured arrangement, allowing the near gathering and distant illumination to sustain different kinds of attention within one image.
Published on February 11, 1812, the print combines etching and mezzotint. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched it, while William T. Annis and J. C. Easling are credited as engravers; this is the third of four states. The multiple credits distinguish the design from the full execution of its printed tones. The image brings a marine subject into a developed graphic form, allowing line and shading to shape the encounter with a space larger than the sheet itself.
