Description
Mist and rain clouds veil a Scottish peat bog backed by mountains, while men cut turf and load a sledge drawn by a white horse. J. M. W. Turner brings practical labor into a landscape whose atmosphere is as active as its figures. The small working group gives the foreground a particular purpose, while the shrouded distance makes the surrounding terrain feel extensive and changeable.
Issued in 1812 for Liber Studiorum, the print was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with George Clint adding aquatint and mezzotint. These tonal techniques let cloud, mist and ground move through different densities rather than rely on hard outlines alone. The image connects human use of the bog with the weather above it, balancing a tangible task against the landscape’s larger atmospheric presence.
