Description
The Source of the Arvaron brings bright, jagged Alpine peaks into view beyond dark pine trees. A rocky glacial stream occupies the foreground, connecting the close ground with the mountainous prospect behind it. Turner gives snow, trees and water different roles within the same space, allowing the river’s beginning to be understood through the terrain around it.
Published on January 1, 1816, the print combines etching and mezzotint and is the first of three states. Turner designed and engraved it, while the Metropolitan Museum tentatively credits Henry Edward Dawe with the etching. The contrast between dark trees and bright peaks draws attention from the stream toward the larger Alpine setting.
