Description
Boys gather beside a pond in Young Anglers, occupied with a rod, a watering can and a bottle. Coats and hats lie together at the left, and small fish appear on the ground, while another boy fishes near a large house. Turner gives the group’s varied activities a shared setting, making the rural corner lively through modest, particular details.
Published on June 1, 1811, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Robert Dunkarton. This first-state impression belongs to Liber Studiorum. The Metropolitan Museum places the scene probably in Marylebone Fields, later transformed into Regent’s Park. The children’s gathering therefore occupies a landscape connected with a changing London, preserving an interval of open ground and informal activity within an expanding city.
