Description
A classical alcove or pavilion stands near the center of a waterside prospect at Isleworth. Trees line the bank toward the right, while calmer water and reflections open the left of the image. Turner makes the structure part of a sheltered landscape, allowing its ordered form to remain distinct among the more irregular masses of foliage.
Published on January 1, 1819, the print combines etching and mezzotint. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched it, with Henry Edward Dawe credited as engraver; this is the second of four states. The image belongs to the later publication of the series, where familiar places remain worthy of pictorial development. Its particular subject offers a way of encountering landscape through enclosure and shelter rather than through an uninterrupted prospect.
