Description
Crypt of Kirkstall Abbey reveals cattle resting beside a pillar beneath round-arched vaults, with light entering from the left, water at the right and trees glimpsed through a doorway. J. M. W. Turner gives the ruined abbey an unexpected life through animals and the world beyond its walls. The massive architecture remains central, but the openings connect its shadowed enclosure with a quieter exterior.
Issued in 1812 for Liber Studiorum, the print combines etching, aquatint and mezzotint. Turner developed the tonal work himself as well as establishing the composition. The different densities make the vaults substantial while allowing light to reveal smaller presences within them. The image joins architectural survival with ordinary animal rest, giving the ruin a character formed by both its history and its present surroundings.
