Description
Betrayal of Christ surrounds the central figure with armed men in a densely wooded landscape. A rope and crowd press close around him, while a disciple raises a weapon over a fallen man at the front. Tall spears and the twisting tree carry the movement upward, making the arrest feel like a sudden disturbance within a dark, closely enclosed world.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut gives the episode an unusually forceful physical presence. Armor, cloth and faces overlap without dissolving the central figure, whose composure contrasts with the activity around him. The landscape participates in the tension through its rough branches and deep shadows, linking the human struggle with the unsettled space in which it unfolds.
