Description
Virgin and Child Crowned by an Angel by Albrecht Dürer brings a heavenly ceremony into an intimate maternal scene. Mary holds the infant close while an angel approaches from above with a crown. A broad halo gives her head a luminous outline, and the folds of her robe anchor the pair within a lightly described landscape.
Engraved in 1520, the work balances the angel’s airborne movement with the seated mother’s steady presence. Fine lines distinguish soft flesh, flowing cloth and the more distant setting, making the small composition unusually rich. Dürer allows the sacred distinction of the crown to coexist with the ordinary closeness of mother and child, giving the scene both dignity and a persuasive warmth.
