Description
A crowned ruler sits beneath a canopy as Christ is brought before him in Christ before Herod. A man between the two figures opens his arms in an emphatic gesture, while a soldier stands close behind the prisoner. The enclosed hall and the ruler’s raised seat give the encounter a formal setting charged with expectation and accusation.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut from The Small Passion makes status visible through clothing, furniture and height. The king’s elaborate headwear contrasts with the simplicity of Christ’s appearance, and the intermediary’s animated hands bridge their separated positions. Strong architectural lines organize the narrow scene, making the still prisoner stand out amid the gestures of those who judge and question him.
