Description
Saint Christopher carries the Christ Child through water, gripping a tall staff as he turns toward the bank. The child sits above his broad shoulders with a radiant halo, while a smaller figure holds a light in the distance. The large bearer and small passenger dominate the scene, their close arrangement making the journey feel physically demanding and protective.
Albrecht Dürer’s 1521 engraving contrasts the saint’s heavy cloak and muscular body with the delicate figure he carries. Water, plants and distant buildings give the crossing a recognizable setting, while the rough staff reinforces the effort of each step. The composition brings endurance and care together, making a legendary encounter vivid through the practical act of supporting another’s weight.
