Description
Portrait of Ulrich Varnbuler by Albrecht Dürer gives its sitter a commanding presence through a close view of head and shoulders. A broad hat frames the face, while the firm profile, slightly parted lips and carefully described eyes create a striking sense of character. Lettering above and beside the figure becomes part of the portrait’s visual architecture.
The woodcut balances large, simple shapes with finely varied textures of hair, fabric and skin. The hat’s sweeping folds contrast with the controlled lines of the face, making the image feel both expansive and attentive. Dürer brings the sitter close without surrounding him with elaborate scenery, allowing appearance, expression and inscription to carry the force of the portrait.
