Description
Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple appears in this engraving after Albrecht Dürer from the Little Passion. Christ raises a whip amid overturned furniture and fleeing figures. Coins spill from a fallen vessel, and one man lies across the foreground as others retreat through the surrounding architecture. The force of Christ’s turn links the diagonal whip with the confusion below, making the enclosed setting seem suddenly filled with motion.
The image translates Dürer’s narrative design into the finely worked lines of engraving. The tumbling objects give concrete form to the disruption of commerce within the sacred building. Closely spaced marks distinguish fabric, bodies and the surrounding setting, keeping the story vivid at a small scale. This later interpretation preserves the direct emotional appeal of the composition while remaining a work after Dürer.
