Description

Folly of Fear by Francisco de Goya sets a towering, shrouded form above a group of recoiling figures. The huge pale shape seems to rise out of darkness, its scale turning the smaller people’s alarm into the subject of the scene.

Strong contrasts and abrupt gestures create an atmosphere of panic. The image leaves the nature of the looming presence uncertain, allowing shadow, size and reaction to carry its unsettling force.
