Description

Francisco Goya’s Ravages of War brings destruction into the interior of a home. Falling beams, displaced furniture and bodies collide in a shattered room, while one figure appears caught in the catastrophe’s violent motion. Familiar domestic space has become unstable and lethal. Pale forms emerge from tightly worked darkness, making the image feel both crowded and abruptly illuminated.

Plate 30 of The Disasters of War shifts the focus from combatants to the consequences of bombardment for ordinary inhabitants. Goya’s broken diagonals deny the viewer a secure place to rest the eye. The scene makes destruction immediate rather than distant: shelter, possessions and human bodies are overturned together. Created during the Peninsular War and published in 1863, the print gives civilian catastrophe a central place in the series’ account of conflict.
