Description
The Birth of the Virgin by Albrecht Dürer transforms a sacred beginning into a bustling domestic scene. Women gather around the newborn child while Saint Anne rests in a bed set deeper within the room. Household furnishings, broad garments and the architecture of the chamber give the episode the fullness of an inhabited home, beneath an angel appearing above.
Made around 1503 for The Life of the Virgin, this woodcut draws interest from the many acts of attention within the scene. The room’s receding spaces connect the mother’s rest with the companions’ activity in the foreground. Dürer lets the miraculous and the familiar coexist, finding the emotional center of the subject in ordinary gestures of care and welcome.
