Description
Christ Nailed to the Cross by Albrecht Dürer gains a vivid immediacy in this hand-colored woodcut. Christ lies across the lowered cross as men bend around his body, while a crowd gathers behind. Added colors distinguish the robes, ground and setting, giving the densely arranged figures a different visual rhythm from a monochrome impression.
The represented work dates to 1509–10 and belongs to The Small Woodcut Passion. Its force comes from the contrast between the still central body and the practical movements surrounding it. The color follows the strong framework of Dürer’s lines without removing their clarity, allowing the scene’s crowded physical action and the vulnerability of its principal figure to remain direct and legible.
