Description
The Nativity shows Mary kneeling beside the infant within a modest shelter, while Joseph and nearby animals give the scene the warmth of an inhabited place. Rough beams, masonry and an opening toward the landscape frame the small sacred encounter. The Nativity places its importance in the attentive relationship between adults and child, allowing a humble setting to carry the story’s full emotional weight.
This woodcut follows Albrecht Dürer’s Nativity design, retaining the relationship of a copy to its model. The firm contours of timber and cloth contrast with the smaller, softer forms of faces and hands. Light gives the birth a devotional focus without removing it from its material surroundings. The image’s appeal comes from that balance of ordinary detail and extraordinary meaning, making a familiar narrative feel close through the simple gestures of kneeling, attending and caring.
