Description
The Adoration of the Kings brings visitors close to Mary and the infant beneath a rustic shelter. An elderly king kneels before the child, while companions stand behind him with their gifts. The small gathering fits tightly within the composition, and the angled roof timbers lead the eye toward the meeting of the child and the kneeling visitor.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut gives the story a direct, intimate character. The king’s bowed posture contrasts with the standing figures, while Mary’s seated presence steadies the group. Rather than opening the subject into an elaborate procession, the image concentrates on recognition and homage at close range, allowing the humble setting and attentive faces to carry the feeling of the encounter.
