Description
Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg faces slightly to one side, his broad hat and layered clothing giving the portrait a strong, compact outline. His alert eyes and softly modeled features stand out against the darker background, while a coat of arms and inscriptions frame the head. The composition combines a recognizable individual with the formal signs of his position.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving gives equal attention to face, fabric and heraldic detail. Fine lines describe the curls of hair and the folds of the robe without overwhelming the sitter’s presence. The contrast between the living expression and the orderly lettering makes this a portrait of both personal character and public authority, inviting a closer look beneath its ceremonial surface.
