Description
Two men meet in an open landscape in this illustration to Heauton Timouroumenos from The Comedies of Terence. One wears an elaborate plumed hat, while the other answers him with animated hands. Their facing poses make conversation the center of the image, and the small buildings and uneven ground give the exchange a recognizable outdoor setting.
This nineteenth-century reprint preserves a woodcut design by Albrecht Dürer in which a classical comedy appears through the dress and gestures of another age. Clear outlines keep the figures easy to distinguish, while short strokes suggest the texture of the surrounding land. The scene’s charm lies in its directness: a meeting and a few gestures are enough to imply an unfolding story.
