Description
This illustration to Heauton Timouroumenos from The Comedies of Terence gathers four men outside a building. Two stand closely together at the left while the others advance or turn toward them, their open hands suggesting an energetic exchange. Hats, belts and the differing angles of their bodies give the group a lively variety within the narrow horizontal scene.
This nineteenth-century reprint preserves Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut design for a classical comedy. The image builds its action through conversation rather than spectacle, with the relationships between the figures suggested by gesture and distance. Bold areas of shadow anchor the building behind them, while the clearly articulated poses give the encounter the expressive simplicity of a small theatrical scene.
