Description
Saint John Beholding the Seven Golden Candlesticks is a 1497–98 woodcut by Albrecht Dürer from his Apocalypse cycle. The subject comes from John’s opening vision in the Book of Revelation, where the seven candlesticks surround a divine presence. An encounter beyond ordinary experience becomes a scene filled with recognizable forms and carefully differentiated objects.
The candlesticks are especially distinctive: each has its own elaborate design, reflecting the ornamental vocabulary of contemporary metalwork. Their individuality gives substance to the vision, allowing the eye to move between symbolic meaning and the close observation of things. Dürer joins this precise detail with the gravity of John’s experience. Saint John Beholding the Seven Golden Candlesticks shows how the artist made a supernatural subject convincing through the specificity and expressive range of line.
