Description
Christ among the Doctors by Albrecht Dürer places a young central figure within the grandeur of a vaulted temple. The scholars gather around him in a room whose arches and receding spaces give the scene a striking depth. Their different gestures and directions of attention make the discussion feel active within the ordered architecture.
From The Life of the Virgin, this woodcut is represented by an impression catalogued to 1511. Dürer uses the setting to emphasize both ceremony and encounter: the large structure contains a close exchange among individuals. The contrast between the youthful figure and the assembled doctors gives the episode its human interest, while finely described masonry and furnishings invite the viewer to explore the place around the conversation.
